As a newcomer to the town, I got a magazine "Ny i stan" ("New in town") to my mailbox.
What does it say? A lot of information about Umeå´s upcoming role as European capital of culture in 2014, lots of planning for the future - grow in population and importance, AND, an immense number of references to Umeå as a STUDENT town, - after all, it was the university that triggered the growth of the city in the first place, when it was built in the sixties, after a competition with other towns.
Then, why is that, that with so much attention on the university, the city seems not concentrated on the students and their needs that much?

Barnafödande i Umeå på rekordnivå
Umeås befolkning ökade med 230 personer under årets tre
första månader och uppgick den sista mars till 117 527 invånare. Antalet födda
under kvartalet var det högsta på många år.
Under januari och mars föddes det ovanligt många barn i
Umeå. Totalt föddes det 411 barn under hela det första kvartalet, vilket är på
samma höga nivå som under rekordåren i början av 1990-talet. Några motsvarande
förändringar finns inte på riksnivån.
Ökningen i Umeå är sannolikt tillfällig, det finns ingenting
i dag som talar för att barnafödandet ska ligga kvar på samma nivå under
kommande månader. Antalet avlidna var relativt litet, men det är det höga
födelsetalet som gör att födelsenettot blir högt.
Inga slutsatser om året
Både in- och utflyttningen är lägre än genomsnittet för
perioden. Flyttningsnettot är glädjande nog positivt, men ökningen är
marginell.
Det går inte att uttala sig om helåret 2013 utifrån
siffrorna för kvartal 1. Avgörande är de två kommande kvartalen med vårterminsavslut
och höstterminsstart samt vad som händer med födelsetalet.

Umeå's population increased by 230 people during the first three months, and was the last of March to 117,527 residents. The number of births during the quarter was the highest in many years.
During January and March was born there many children in Umeå . A total of 411 children were born throughout the first quarter, which is at the same high level as during the peak years in the early 1990s. Some corresponding changes are not on the national level .
The increase in Umeå is likely to be temporary , there is nothing today to indicate that the birth rate will remain at the same level in the coming months. The number of deaths was relatively small , but it is the high birth rate that makes net births is high.
No conclusions about the year
Both in- and out-migration is lower than the average for the period. Net migration is gratifyingly positive , but the increase is marginal.
Can not comment on the full-year 2013 based on figures for quarter 1. Crucially, the next two quarters, with spring semester finished and autumn semester and what happens to the birth rate .
